- 184 pages, 90 Reading Response Forms, and a High-quality matte paperback cover
- 5 types of Reading Responses with instructions in the beginning of the book
- What I Read Today: This is a more open-ended response for the child to freely respond to what they read,
- Non-Fiction Reading Response: For use with non-fiction books, and has a few prompts for connecting with the non-fiction text.
- Fiction Reading Response: Answer questions that will work with a variety of fiction books.
- Recall: This type of response is for summary practice and parents can assess comprehension and the ability of the child to remember what he or she read.
- Copywork: This requires the child to copy text exactly as it is in a book. This helps the child practice proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation as they carefully copy.
- The 5 types of Reading Responses are rotated throughout the book to give variety of assignment and also familiar assignments to make it easy to repeat for the child.
- Once the parent teaches the child how to do each type of response with the simple instructions found in the front of the book, the child can confidently use the journal all year long.
- For K-5, parents can require more or less for the length of the responses to accommodate for various ages
- Encourages the use a variety of real books to have your child reading consistently
As a former teacher, turned homeschool mom, I made this Reading Response Journal to simplify homeschool reading assignments. There are 5 types of Reading Responses and instructions are included in the front of the book for how to use them. Once you model each type for your child, they can simply read from a book from your home or classroom library and then complete a Reading Response.
Since a typical school year is 180 days, this journal has 90 days worth of Reading Responses. The back of each page is blank lines and could be used to add additional responses of your own choosing or to have flow-over space if they want to write more for a response. I chose to do 90 so that a response is not required every day. One idea would be to have your child read daily in homeschool, but only complete a reading response about what they read every other day. If you use it that way, it will last the entire school year.
This is good for elementary school ages and you can require more or less writing depending on the ability of your child. You can also give feedback to help your child improve reading comprehension and writing skills. This open ended journal will get your child thinking and writing and is an excellent way to build literacy skills. It’s also a wonderful way to track their progress through your the year with a journal full of writing samples that will help you see how well they are actually understanding what they are reading.
They will improve as readers and writers with this book. This is a very simple book, but the model of 5 repeating forms keeps it simple and predictable. Your kids will have a read and then write about it routine, that will make homeschool feel easy. Though it may seem simple, reading and writing is the best thing for them to do regularly to get better at both! This easy journal setup makes it so they’ll know just what to do and become more confident with reading and writing as you offer them feedback and encouragement each day.
