The Best Gift: A Homemaker’s Love
This is my personal reflection on a gift given to me last year. I wrote this last May and I am deciding to share it now.
It’s been about 10 years since my first child was born, and my journey as a stay at home mom first began. My fourth child, who is also my youngest child, just celebrated his 4th birthday.
A Visit with Gifts
My mama came to visit and brought my aunt along to visit and celebrate his birthday. My aunt brought tons of goodies for me and the kids. They were Christmas gifts, a little late. We had so much fun opening and talking about them all, I didn’t even actually see everything that she had brought for me.
Checking it All Out
Later that night, once the kids were in bed, and I had finished my shower, and had a chance to sit on the bed to relax, I pulled out one of the gift filled bags that my aunt had given me. There were sweet things like keychains and cosmetic bags, things about our niece/aunt relationship, and fun things like a small ring holder and makeup brushes. I dug to the bottom and I saw something that seemed different than all the rest.
Something Old
It was tattered and worn with age… a faded blue cotton fabric with strips of red. I dug it out because I knew it was old and I felt like it was familiar, like it was my Grandma’s. My Grandma has been gone (passed away) for about 24 years, so this was shocking to think that.
The Surprise!
I quickly, but carefully, unfolded it and realized it was an apron! I started exclaiming out loud, “Is this really my Grandma’s apron?!” I felt like it was, but it didn’t even seem possible at first considering how long she’d been gone. I was so excited and started texting my aunt to check. We got on the phone and she confirmed that it was my granny’s apron!

A Reminder to Serve With Humility as a Homemaker
She had put it in there for me. She knew that I would cherish it and I do. Seeing it made me cry a flood, but I was so happy. I had been praying and seeking God about my growth as a homemaker and in general and my granny’s apron felt like a gift from God to me too. It was a reminder to serve with humility, to put the needs of others ahead of my own, and to show love above the rest.
Inspired by My Granny’s Love
My granny was a Christian, a pastor’s wife, and a wonderful woman of God. Her life was a testimony of selfless faith, devotion to God, her husband, and her family. The apron felt like the perfect thing of hers for me to get at this point in my life. I am a Christian, stay-at-home mom of 4.
Remembering Her Sweet Spirit
Many times as I feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities and list of to-dos that seem never-ending, I imagine what it must have been like for her many years ago as she raised ten children and helped raise grandchildren as well. Mainly I remember her love, her sweet spirit, and the way she made me feel.
The Tattered Hand-Sewn Apron Had a Cross Sewn to the Pocket
Her apron was tattered and appears to be hand-stitched with some repairs. The pocket has a cross made onto it. I think she sewed and designed it, making it even more special.
Be a Vessel for the Love of Jesus as a Homemaker
It inspires me to serve with humility and to have a gentle and quiet spirit and to always remember that love, that comes from God, as He works through us, is the most important part. It’s not the newest gadgets, the trends, the clean floors, or the decorations that mean the most, it’s the godly training, the Biblical teaching, and living and teaching by example. The way we can be the best homemakers is through being a vessel for the love of Jesus to be poured out onto our family members and those around us. The love is what really counts.
