How to Make Southern Sweet Tea

I am going to show you how to make Southern Sweet Tea, the way my mama taught me to make it. It is very simple, but I realize not everyone was raised in the South. You may have acquired a taste for it, but didn’t know how to make it yourself. If so, this post is for you.

You will need:

  • a small pot for boiling the water and allowing the tea to steep
  • a tea pitcher
  • water
  • a large spoon to stir the sugar into the tea as it dissolves
  • tea bags
  • sugar

Steps to Make Southern Sweet Tea:

  1. Fill a small pot with water
  2. Bring it to a boil
  3. Put the tea bags in the boiling water and turn it off
  4. Allow the tea to steep for a few minutes, make sure it’s still hot as you move to the next steps
  5. Pour sugar into the bottom of your tea pitcher- to taste (1-2 cups)
  6. Mix in the tea while it’s still hot and add water to the hot tea bag repeatedly and fill the pitcher with the tea. Because the tea bag is still hot, the water will immediately turn to tea when it hits the hot tea bag as you do this.
  7. Store the sugar into the tea as it dissolves.
  8. Chill in the refrigerator and serve cold, over ice if desired.
